Six years after writing the short story The Executor, Margaret Oliphant reworked this story into the full-length novel Brownlows, modifying the names slightly, and setting the action in another town. The conditional period of Mrs Thompson/Thomson's will is changed from three years to twenty-five years, to accommodate a revised and expanded story line.
