The novel Janet was serialised in Lady's Pictorial from January to June in 1890, telling the story of a young girl who goes out as a governess. It was preceded by a short story ("prologue") in the Christmas issue of 1889. The prologue describes Janet's comfortable but essentially loveless upbringing by a relation, "Aunt Mary".
When Janet came out in book form, the prologue was not included, though it is important to Janet's story.
