The Story

A light-hearted story about two unmarried gentlewomen living in Lasswade, who are dress-makers, and who have raised their niece Annie Orme. Now they try a little matchmaking to find her a husband.

Biographical and other notes

Margaret Oliphant's first recollection of home was in the Scottish village of Lasswade. She moved to Glasgow at age 6, but never forgot this happy home. The second house described in this story, near the toll on the Dalkeith Road, is based on her childhood home.
