The Story

As Mary begins her railway journey from London to Edinburgh, contemplating a bleak future, she thinks back upon the past. Only four years earlier she had looked forward to married life in India, having made her choice between two young men - both of whom she had cared for - and believing a bright future lay before her. Now she has returned, widowed and poor, her pride humbled by her late husband's ill-treatment of her.

Mary's pride may have one more blow to sustain when she realizes that the other young man, Cosmo Gordon, is travelling in the same train.
