The Story

Mrs Mulgrave's pretty cottage faces Admiral Fortis's larger house next door where he lives with his two daughters Nelly and Martha. A pleasant intimacy has sprung up between the two houses, and Mrs Mulgrave is especially fond of Nelly.

When young Captain Llewellyn arrives in the neighbourhood on a visit, he enjoys spending time with the sisters; and it appears he is falling in love with Nelly. But after he is called away suddenly, without having the opportunity to declare himself, unexpected news follows.

This story is part of the delightful series Neighbours on the Green, which takes place in the fictional village of Dinglefield Green. (See the link below for more information.)
