An imperfect governess - 2 related story lines

Twenty years after writing the short story Mrs Merridew's Fortune, Margaret Oliphant reworked its backstory into the full-length novel Janet. Both young women are named Janet, both are governess to a family in St John's Wood, both have similar encounters with the brother, and both are affected by a gentleman caller. From this point the novel Janet develops in a different direction and has a different outcome.
